aik was founded in 1999 as a joint venture between occupational pension funds and Deutsche Apotheker- und Ärztebank (apoBank), the finance specialist for the healthcare professions, with its registered office in Düsseldorf. The basic idea was to create an independent real estate investment company that could meet, in particular, the investment requirements of occupational pension funds. Starting with this idea, a successful real estate company was established on the German market that has now become the market leader in real estate asset management for occupational pension funds.
aik’s shareholders are apoBank and seven occupational pension funds with parity in the shareholders’ and supervisory board meetings. In contrast to many competitors, this unique model, in which investors are also shareholders, is conducive to asset management with a value-added orientation without the dominance of the profit maximisation interests of the shareholders.
Since starting up, aik has shown continual growth with respect to the number of real estate funds initiated as well as the value of the total assets managed. Today, the Düsseldorf-based real estate investment company manages, on behalf of its institutional clients, real estate assets amounting to a value of over € 4.7 billion in eleven open-end real estate funds, of which eight are single-investor funds and three are joint funds.
